Services

Overview of Services

The Library provides the following services to Hospital staff:

  • access to medical, nursing, and allied health databases
  • advice and assistance in searching bibliographic and full-text sources
  • access to reference sources and current journals in print and online
  • loans and copy service for items not held in stock
  • assistance in purchasing and managing departmental information materials.

In addition, staff wishing to use the resources of other libraries are provided with appropriate information and referral where suitable.

Loans

Items in the SCGH Library collection may be borrowed by SCGH staff, and by other health professionals currently enrolled in one of the certificate nursing specialty courses run by SCGH. New staff should contact the Library to register for borrowing.

We lend to other libraries via interlibrary loan, and are members of the GratisNet health libraries network.

Visitors to the Library are welcome; please ring first to make an appointment.

Library Training

The Library can provide instruction classes for staff in a variety of information literacy skills, such as use of online resources, literature searching with Ebsco or PubMed, and sources for evidence based healthcare. Hands-on classes can be conducted either in the Library (up to 8 participants) or by arrangement in the computer training room in our Education & Development Centre (up to 12 participants). Sessions can also be held in ward or department seminar rooms.

Please contact the Library to discuss your needs.

Document Delivery

SCGH staff can use our document delivery service to obtain items which are not held either in the Hospital or at UWA Medical Library. This service is provided on the following basis:

  • Document delivery requests are for work-related purposes. (If you are studying through an external institution, please use its facilities to obtain the items needed for your course.)
  • A cost centre is required on each request.
  • For copyright purposes, we must have a separate and signed form for each request.
  • Please check first to ensure that the Hospital Library does not have the book or journal you require.

Please use the online or print forms to make requests.

Searches

Hospital staff can request help with literature searches. Contact the Librarian to arrange:

  • a guided search (working in tandem, either in the Library or in your department); or
  • a literature search performed by the Librarian on your behalf.

Please go to the forms section of the site to send your requests.

The Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Library was established in January 1997 as a co-ordinating centre for information services and purchase of resource materials. It has close ties with the University of Western Australia Medical and Dental Library - also located on the QEII site - and with other health libraries in Western Australia. The King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women (Women & Newborn Health Service) is the other health Library service in the North Metropolitan Area Health Service.

The mission of the Hospital Library and Information Service is to provide accurate, authoritative and appropriate information sources for Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, in a manner which is:

  • timely for decision-making in all aspects of clinical care, management and support services
  • convenient and easily accessible to all clients
  • cost effective.
